In January 2026, the European Patent Office (EPO) granted ThreatFabric a patent for behavioural fraud detection technology.
The patent describes a solution designed to be:
✅ Accurate
✅ Lightweight
✅ Privacy-preserving
✅ Seamless across web and mobile
The technology is particularly well suited to detecting APP fraud and scams, including impersonation, romance, and investment scams, especially cases where victims are manipulated into authorising payments under a scammer’s instruction.
Patent overview
ThreatFabric has received a European patent for a next-generation fraud detection technology that uses behavioural analytics to identify suspicious activity during digital banking sessions. Instead of depending only on static rules, device identifiers, or intrusive biometric methods, the system continuously analyses how users interact with websites and mobile apps to detect fraud signals in real time.
The patented approach captures different user actions, including navigation, interaction patterns, and other behavioural signals, and evaluates them using specialised AI models. By analysing behaviour across multiple stages of a session, the system can separate legitimate customer activity from anomalous or potentially fraudulent behaviour.
A key innovation is the aggregation of behavioural data into lightweight “sub-sessions” that can be analysed efficiently and continuously. This enables rapid detection of fraud signals without creating noticeable delays or friction for customers, helping organisations identify suspicious behaviour while preserving a smooth digital experience.
The patent also addresses the industry challenge of balancing security with privacy. While traditional biometric approaches can be effective, they often rely on highly sensitive personal data. ThreatFabric’s design focuses on behavioural patterns rather than stored biometric identifiers, helping organisations improve fraud detection while supporting privacy and regulatory requirements such as GDPR.
Overall, the patented technology supports ThreatFabric’s vision for intelligent, privacy-preserving fraud prevention. Developed in collaboration with leading European banks, it helps financial institutions detect fraud more accurately across web and mobile channels while reducing customer friction: an increasingly important requirement as digital fraud becomes more sophisticated.
